What is your pain relief?

In life we all feel pain.

There is no way around it, you will feel pain sometime.

Now I am not talking about hitting your thumb with a hammer or cutting yourself accidentally.

I am talking about the deep emotional pain that we all feel, the stuff that goes back a long way. Maybe it was a parent or a teacher who said something to hurt you. As children we have no Idea how to cope with this kind of pain, so we do nothing.

But the hurt does not go away.

We enter adulthood and for some reason think we are all OK. I believe we have all been hurt someway so we tend to find things to ease the pain.

It is easy to see this in others, even more easy to see the obvious pain relief strategies such as

Drugs

Alcohol

Sex

Over Working

What about the less obvious types of pain relief?

I think spending is something many people do to relieve their pain. Spending in itself is not a problem but if we do it for pain relief then it can become a real problem.

My story is one of spending for all the wrong reasons. As I have mentioned in my previous blogs I have been through divorce and this has brought me a lot of shame. When I was in the middle of all this, I had no idea I was using it for pain relief. I just thought I was passionate about my hobby.

I am a drummer.
I love to play the drums.
In it self playing the drums could be a place of escape, but that was not enough for me.
No I needed way more that that. I thought I was looking for the perfect sound.

Whatever that is?

So I took out loans to buy more drums and more drums and even more drums. Then I needed somewhere to keep them so I built a studio.

More loans.

Not just any studio, I wanted my studio to be good enough for recording in.

More loans.

So I had all my drum kits, my recording studio and all the recording equipment I could ever need.

I still was not satisfied.

I heard about Chris Brady Drums in Australia. You can buy them in New York, which is not far from Boston where I live. So do you think I went to New York to check them out?

Not me.

More loans.

I went to Australia to meet Chris Brady and help design my own custom snare drum.

Yes it does sound that good.

Was the pain gone?

No, I still had the pain and now I still have the pain of so much debt.

We need to deal with our pain in a constructive manner. It is not about pain relief, It is about dealing with the pain so it is no longer there.

I could say it was as simple as forgiving myself and the pain was gone.

But is forgiving yourself that simple?

You will have to decide that for yourself.

My pain has gone, I have moved on, I have forgiven myself, I am in a lot of debt and I love my drums.

Identify what is causing your pain, get help to deal with it and you too can be free.

Enjoy your Life,

Dave
